While it can be difficult to come up with an exact figure, The National Law Center on Homelessness and Poverty estimates that in any given year there are 3.5 million homeless people in the U.S. This population can run into many health problems, and that includes dental issues. Recently, one California county has decided to do something to increase the oral health of those who sleep on the streets or in shelters.
The Daily Journal reports that San Mateo, California will launch a mobile dental clinic in January that will offer care to the homeless.
"If you want to move away from being homeless you need jobs and the confidence to smile and be able to look and talk like what society expects," said Jim Beaumont, program director of homeless health care for the San Mateo Medical Center, quoted by the news source.
For the uninsured, there are many affordable dental plans to that can help them gain access to dentists, which may give them a valuable tool to finding a job with healthcare coverage - a winning smile.
