One of the many reasons to visit the dentist regularly is that they can spot any possible signs of oral cancer. The National Center for Biotechnology Information states that, due to late diagnosis, many people do not realize they have this disease until it is too late.
Recently, Health Canal reported on a survey conducted by the British Dental Health Foundation which found that nine out of ten dental patients want to be screened for this disease, and while 90 percent of dentists check for it, few of them discuss the risks and symptoms with individuals.
"Knowing the risks and learning how to self-examine are key when it comes to the early detection of mouth cancer, where it can dramatically improve survival rates to 90 percent. Without early detection, half will die – it really is a silent killer," said Nigel Carter, D.D.S., quoted by the news source.
The survey also found that one out of seven dentists have identified a case of mouth cancer in the past year, and researchers stressed the importance of diagnosing this disease early.
