In the first nine months of this year, dental professionals were reporting a 3 percent loss of revenue across the board. The recession has led to people cutting back on a lot of things, including dental care. According to the Los Angeles Times, it's not just individuals who are suffering, but dentists as well as they see their practices rapidly losing patients. In response to this, dental professionals are increasing their marketing and even hiring experts to help them attract more people.

"Right now, your practicing dentist is very unsure of where the future is going," said Matthew Messina, D.D.S. a Cleveland dentist who serves as a consumer advisor for the American Dental Association, quoted by the news source "We're looking for any ray of sunshine."

The Times states that 2011 is shaping up to be a particularly bad year for dentists. In the first nine months of this year, dental professionals were reporting a 3 percent loss of revenue across the board. All of this suggests that people are skipping regular trips to the dentist, which can be dangerous to their health.

Dentists can spot the early signs of tooth decay or gum disease. If left untreated, WebMD reports that these conditions can lead to pain and loose teeth, and some studies have shown that gum disease may even affect the heart.
