What do dental hygienists do?
While most people understand the role of a dentist, some individuals may not know the important part that dental hygienists play in caring for teeth. Recently, The Salt Lake Tribune explained all of the parts of a dental hygienists job so people can understand that these professionals do more than just clean teeth.
The news source reports that dental hygienists perform two very important exams. First, they check for signs that a patient is developing oral cancer. Next, they do a periodontal assessment to ensure that no other serious dental problems are present.
"It’s just like checking your blood pressure at your physician’s office," said hygienist Kathy Harris, quoted by the news source. "It should just be common practice, every six months."
The Bureau of Labor Statistics states that these dental professionals remove hard and soft deposits from teeth, and teach patients how to properly take care of their mouths and gums. Dental hygienists also perform preventative procedures to try and help patients stave off tooth decay.
