For many people, Thanksgiving means football time. For dentists,Thanksgiving is a time when athletes need to be particularly careful when it comes to their dental health. Recently, the Dover Post released a statement by the Division of Public Health in Delaware explaining the importance of protecting teeth during sports events.
"Preventing [tooth loss] from happening is best, of course, which can be done easily by wearing a mouth guard when participating in sports. However, accidents do happen, and knowing what to do and how much time you have to act can help to save a tooth," said Greg McClure, D.D.S., quoted by the Post.
McClure said that if a tooth is lost, try to find it immediately and grasp it from the bottom, avoiding the root. Place the tooth in a glass of milk, and then call the dentist.
The American Dental Association reports that athletes are putting themselves at twice the risk of sustaining an injuring to their teeth if they don't use a mouthguard, which highlights the importance of using this simple protective device.
