A national survey conducted by the Hispanic Dental Association found that many
Hispanics are in need of better access to oral care. Researchers found that people in this population may be better served by
having more Spanish-speaking dentists and dental hygienists in their communities.
Hispanics represent 16 percent of the total population of the U.S., which highlights the need for more dental health professionals that can meet the needs of this group. The survey found that close to half of Hispanics lack dental insurance, and 30 percent of respondents said they believe that cavities will go away on their own with regular brushing, which is untrue. This survey uncovered key gaps that can help provide the oral health care community with a concrete starting point from which to turn awareness into action, said Ivan Lugo, D.M.D.
More than one-third of of Hispanics who reported experiencing an oral health problem in the past year said that it was severe enough to impact their daily activities. This suggests that this population needs better access to dental care so they can get oral issues fixed before they become serious.
