According to the National Institutes of Health, having good dental habits as a child is key to maintaining overall health. Unfortunately, not every child is given access to proper oral care, which can lead to many other potentially serious issues that may spread beyond teeth and gums.
A recent study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that native Alaskan children have high levels of tooth decay due to a lack of fluoridated water.
Reuters reported on the study, which cited a high prevalence of sugary soda as one of the major reasons why the children in this area are experiencing so many dental issues. Brad Whistler, Alaska state oral health director and a co-author of the study, said that it's clear just by looking at these kids that something is wrong.
"When they smile, you see a lot of silver teeth," said Whistler, quoted by Reuters.
WebMD states that fluoride is important to preventing tooth decay by making teeth more resistant to everyday acids that come from food and drinks. Most parts of Alaska do not have this substance in their water, making it difficult for children to have access to it.
