The physical and emotional burden that is suffered by those who have experienced the violence of domestic abuse can only be described as intense. An aspect of that physical suffering not often noted but worthy of attention is the damage to victims' teeth and overall oral health. A charitable initiative called the Give Back a Smile Program is aiming to address this issue, according to the Huffington Post.
The news source reports that women such as Susan Kauffman are the grateful recipients of this program's benefits. Kauffman had been so severely beaten that she lost some of her teeth and many of those that remained required a number of dental procedures - crowns, bridgework and root canals. The program gave her the gift of $40,000 worth of dental work.
All of the dental health care services provided by this program are free of charge, provided by oral health professionals and technicians who volunteer their time.
This is intended to offset the often astronomical costs of healthcare as a whole that are paid by victims of domestic violence. These figures are totaled at approximately $4 billion each year, according to the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry Charitable Foundation.
