Oral health care lacking in Northern Virginia
Updated: 9/9/2011 11:00:31 AM

Oral health care lacking in Northern Virginia On September 1, the findings of a survey related to dental health care and other health matters conducted by the Northern Virginia Health Foundation were released. The report by the non-profit healthcare advocacy group contained a number of alarming facts regarding the state of oral health services in a significant portion of Virginia, according to the Washington Post.

The news source reports that only about 25 percent of adults in Northern Virginia who had lower annual incomes but possessed health insurance had dental care included in that coverage. This was in stark contrast to those with higher incomes - a total of 64 percent of adults in that category had healthcare with dental benefits.

Additionally, an even more startling fact was revealed - a total of 16 percent of lower-income adults in the region had not seen a dentist for a check-up or for any other reason in over five years.

Virginia's state-provided medical insurance only covers oral surgery procedures deemed absolutely necessary, and private insurance can be quite costly for many, even in an area of the state characterized as having median household incomes of over $100,000.

The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research states that 23 percent of adults aged 20 to 64 suffer from untreated tooth decay, and that this, like other dental health issues is more prevalent among the economically disadvantaged.
