Adults who are living with various developmental disabilities are often in dire need of dental health care, due to their susceptibility to a host of diseases connected to oral health, including diabetes. As a result, Marianne Benson, a resident of Rancho Mirage, California, has started a nonprofit organization, Desert Friends of the Developmentally Disabled, to fulfill that specific need, according to the Desert Sun.
The news source reports that this concern has become particularly crucial due to California's relatively recent elimination of state-provided dental care benefits for adult residents with developmental disabilities that affect them on a daily basis. Since that change in public health policy three years ago, the issue has become more and more pressing.
Numerous dental health professionals have offered their skills to Benson's group, providing patients dental check-ups and services at greatly reduced costs.
Desert Friends for the Developmentally Disabled is headed by Benson, who serves as CEO, and individuals including project manager Richard Mottler, who is also a member of the nonprofit organization's board.
According to the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, a total of 92 percent of adults 20 to 64 have experienced tooth decay, with 23 percent of those in that group suffering from untreated decay.
