A new health survey conducted in Vashon-Maury Island, Washington, just off the coast of the state, cited dental health care as a major medical need among the community's residents. The only health issue to cause equivalent concern to Vashon citizens was the price of prescription drugs, according to the Vashon-Maury Island Beachcomber.
The news source reports that a total of 461 citizens have responded to the survey over the course of the past two months, which was conducted by the recently established Vashon Health Care Council.
Although the questionnaire did not directly address dental hygiene or oral health issues, respondents consistently brought up the subject on numerous occasions. A total of 205 participants in the survey stated a need for dental care, and 39 individuals out of that group claimed that it was their most important health concern.
Hilary Emmer, the chief architect of the survey, commented on the prevalence of dental concerns among respondents.
"Dental care is a recurring theme here, and we never asked the question," Emmer told the news source. "Imagine if we had asked about it."
The American Dental Association states that many public health programs in the U.S. fail to meet the dental care needs of adults, and are often only slightly more successful providing such services to children.
