Case Western Reserve University School of Dental Medicine, located in Cleveland, Ohio, recently received two substantial grants from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). The organization, a division of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, gave the educational institution two five-year grants, with a combined total of about $2.6 million in funding.
Each grant has been earmarked for a specific purpose. The first grant will fund pre-doctoral training programs and a forthcoming dual degree program providing a doctorate in dental medicine and a master's degree in public health. Funds from the second grant will be used for a post-doctoral training program and residency program for the School of Dental Medicine.
As the Cleveland educational institution is located near 10 city neighborhoods cited by the HRSA as providing less than one dentist for every 5,000 area residents, the grants will ideally help fight the lack of reliable dental health care among these individuals.
The funding will also be used to benefit the school's Family First Program, providing examinations to treat families with histories of oral health issues.
Although dental health problems such as tooth decay are a major issue for children, the American Dental Association states that they cannot be ignored in adults, as the majority of Americans over 50 years old have tooth-root decay.
