The University of Buffalo School of Dental Medicine, in Buffalo, New York, received a grant of $500,000 from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services on August 10, to assist with its efforts in providing children's dental care.
Funds received from this grant will be used to replace its Mobile Dental Unit (MDU), a large van containing the equipment and amenities of a standard dentist's office, staffed by skilled University dental professionals.
Since the existing van is 14 years old, acquiring a larger model with room for more children and equipment is a priority for the school. Using the MDA, the university's dental staff have been able to provide 38,000 patients with oral health care.
Joseph Bernat, D.D.S., associate dean and chair of pediatric and community dentistry for the University of Buffalo, discussed the importance of pediatric dental care.
"We know that dental problems are health problems that affect children's performance in the classroom. Because of this rgant, we will be able to continue to provide dental care to kids in need, which will improve their overall health and quality of life," he said.
The National Institute for Dental and Craniofacial Research states that 42 percent of children aged 2 to 11, and 59 percent of adolescents from 12 to 19, have had dental cavities in their primary teeth.
