Website offers consumers info on dental care costs in their area The costs of receiving oral health care can be considerable, and are often the reason why certain individuals put dentistry off until problems have arisen. In an effort to better inform U.S. citizens of the prices they can expect to encounter at local dental practices and doctor's offices, the nonprofit organization Fair Health has launched a website making that information readily available, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

The website allows users to calculate the average costs of a given dental or medical procedure and provide an estimated median figure. Information for specific practices or practitioners is not offered.

Fair Health was able to legally supply this information due to the outcome of a 2009 lawsuit between the Attorney General of New York and several major health insurance providers. The settlement demanded insurers surrender reimbursement information for several million claims.

Fair Health's database now includes over information from over 110 million medical claims, which eventually supply consumers the data they need, as confirmed by Robin Gelburd, the organization's president.

"The public can now, for the first time, easily find price data that will help them inform their health care decisions," Gelburd said, according to the news source.

The American Dental Organization claims that many state health programs do not provide necessary dental care for half of their children, and in some instances fail to cover adults entirely.
