Dentists in Kansas are being called upon by the Kansas Dental Association to accept patients covered by Medicaid insurance. This request is being aimed at the majority of the state's dental professionals, according to Kansas Public Radio station KCUR.
The news source reports that high operating costs dental offices can lead to dentists losing money on patients paying through Medicaid, causing them to balk at accepting such insurance.
Kevin Robertson, executive director of the Kansas Dental Association, claims that he and his organization recognize the special services that many Kansas dentists offer to low-income families and individuals.
Nevertheless, Robertson claims that refusing Medicaid negatively impacts the public perception of dentists.
"The amount of charitable care that dentists do is not seen in quite the light that it should be because of the number of participants on Medicaid," Robertson told the news source. "So we're asking for the profession and for the good of Kansas patients, that people step up and provide more care to Medicaid patients."
According to the American Dental Association, health programs in many states fail to deliver adequate dental care to the majority of children and adults, and some states offer none whatsoever for adults. Individuals looking to increase their access to quality dental care may consider purchasing discount dental plans.
