Dental 'tweets' may help identify the public's oral health concerns

Some individuals may broadcast their dental problems via Twitter How many people who need dental care actually visit a dentist?

While surveys may be able to uncover this type of information, there could be an easier way to do so.

A recent study published in the Journal of Dental Research found that many people who use the social media website Twitter post messages about their toothaches and dental problems.

The study's results showed that out of a sample of 772 tweets, a total of 83 percent were general statements about dental pain, 22 percent referred that the individual had taken action to solve an oral problem and 15 percent described the impact of these types of issues on the Twitter users' daily lives.

"Utilizing Twitter is an interesting, early stage approach with potential impact in the assessment of large sets of population information," said the journal's editor-in-chief William Giannobile.

A study published in the journal Special Care in Dentistry found that among low-income adults living in Maryland, nearly 45 percent reported that they experienced more than five toothaches within the previous 10 years.
