Dental implants or crowns are often used to replace or improve the appearance of teeth that have been damaged due to injury or decay. Similar to other fields of medicine, advancements in technology and instruments are frequently being made in order to help speed up the oral care process and provide optimal outcomes.
A recent article published in the International Journal of Rapid Manufacturing indicated that a new printing device may allow dentists to scan patients' jaws and manufacture so-called printed copies of teeth based on their unique profile.
The researchers explained that the rapid prototyping machine acts as a 3D printer to produce prosthetics using biocompatible composite material.
This new technique may provide benefits for the significant number of Americans who experience tooth loss.
According to the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, a total of 69 percent of adults between the ages of 35 and 44 have lost at least on permanent tooth due to an accident, gum disease, tooth decay or failed dental surgery. Moreover, by the age of 74, more than one-quarter of adults have lost all of their permanent teeth.
