New advancements in orthodontics have changed the way that individuals wear braces. Some may be clear, nearly invisible retainers while others are placed behind the teeth.
Research has shown that a growing number of adults are seeking braces to help improve their smiles, and a recent article published by the Los Angeles Times highlighted several possible factors that may contribute to this trend.
The newspaper reported that some insurance companies have begun offering increased coverage for braces, which may make this type of treatment more affordable for adults who have considered straightening their teeth.
Also, new braces options made out of flexible nickel titanium require fewer orthodontist appointments for wire adjustments, the news provider explained.
"Many adults are concerned about how their smile might affect their chances for employment or advancement in a competitive job market. Many are reentering the dating scene after a divorce and are looking for a more attractive, youthful appearance," said dentist Stephen Tracy, quoted by the news source.
According to the American Association of Orthodontists, adults account for about 20 percent of orthodontic patients.
