Teeth whitening has become a widely sought cosmetic procedure. Individuals can purchase bleaching agents in virtually any health and beauty care aisle, or they may seek services from spas or even at a shopping mall.
However, the Connecticut Dental Commission voted to outlaw whitening procedures conducted by individuals who are not qualified dentists or dental hygienists, according to a recent article published by the New Haven Independent.
While state residents will still be able to buy their favorite whitening products for home use, they will only be able to get laser treatments at the dentist.
"[Whitening] becomes the practice of dentistry when such unlicensed person either uses light in an attempt to enhance the product’s effectiveness or a person conducts an analysis of a person’s individual needs based upon an examination or evaluation," members of the commission said in their ruling, quoted by the news provider.
The news source explained that the experts were wary of non-dentists performing these procedures since they are irreversible and may not be healthy for people with certain oral conditions.
According to a survey conducted by the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, the majority of people would choose to improve the color of their teeth before any other aspect of their oral health.
