Developing good oral care habits at an early age may help prevent tooth decay later in life Some health experts say that proper dental care is most important during childhood since oral hygiene habits developed during this time are often repeated throughout life. However, a recent report released by the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources indicated that many young residents lack good dental health practices.

An article published by highlighted several main points from the report, which indicated that a significant number of youths do not have access to the dental services they need.

The news provider reported that 42 percent of the state's third graders have varying amounts of tooth decay, while 17 percent have untreated cavities. Furthermore, less than 30 percent of children in this age group had received dental sealants, which are typically given to kids to protect their teeth against cavities, which can form when youngsters consume high amounts of sugar or do not brush their teeth regularly.

Inadequate dental health in children is a problem all over the country. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 22 percent of youths between the ages of 2 and 17 have not visited the dentist within the previous year.
