High school students take on role of dental care educators
Updated: 6/9/2011 4:59:58 PM

Dental students help provide cleanings and educate elementary school kids Some South Tahoe High School students are simultaneously working toward a future career in dentistry and helping improve the smiles of children in their community, according to a recent article published by the Tahoe Daily Tribune.

The newspaper reported that students who are part of the dental assistant program are exempt from the first dental-based class in college, so the high school curriculum gives them a head start as undergraduates.

The aspiring dental professionals give presentations on good oral hygiene at local elementary schools and have filled 2,000 care packages with toothbrushes, floss and letters about good oral care for children to take home to their parents.

This may impact the future health of these kids, since many of the youngsters were found to have untreated dental problems when they were recently seen by volunteer dental care providers, the teachers told the news source.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a total of 16 percent of American children between the ages of 6 and 19 have untreated dental caries.
