Some people may think that they have to live with troublesome gaps in their smiles that are caused by missing teeth because cosmetic procedures are too invasive or expensive. However, the popularity of dental implants is growing, according to a recent article published in the Cape May County Herald.
Although tooth loss is often associated with old age, young people may also experience this problem due to mouth trauma, gum disease or a failed root canal, the news provider reported.
Members of one local dental practice told the newspaper how dental implants are designed to improve a patient's smile. The providers explained that dentists first began using dental implants in 1952.
The titanium device mimics the function of tooth roots, which serve as anchors for teeth underneath the gums. This type of material is used because it is durable and does not irritate bones or tissues in the mouth, the dentists told the news source.
According to the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, dental implants have about a 95 percent long-term success rate.
