Some data have revealed that many Americans delayed dental care during the recent economic recession. However, an article published by Northwestern University's Medill Reports indicated that more patients are returning to the dentist because they have obtained insurance coverage or purchased discount dental vouchers online.
"I have seen a number of patients coming in who have new jobs. I think more people have insurance, so more people are coming out to use their insurance benefits," said dental receptionist Rachel Williams, quoted by the news provider.
The news source noted that many people are taking advantage of discount dental offerings on daily deal websites. For example, some popular sites have recently advertised $1,000 off teeth-straightening treatments or laser teeth whitening for less than half of the normal value.
Despite the uptick in dental visits, many Americans are still living with untreated oral problems. According to the American Dental Hygienists' Association, a total of 40 percent of U.S. residents do not receive adequate oral care. The organization states that cost is the most frequently cited reason for not seeking dental treatment.
