National statistics have shown that there are millions of Americans who go without dental care due to financial strain or lack of insurance. This may be one reason why thousands of residents and dentists in Vermont recently opposed a 3 percent tax increase on dental services.
According to the American Dental Association, more than 11,000 individuals signed a form protesting the tax, which had been proposed by the state's governor in an attempt to reduce Vermont's budget deficit.
However, state legislature voted against the increase earlier this month, the organization reported.
"This was a tremendous success that combined the efforts of all of our members, our lobbyists, the American Dental Association State Public Affairs program and, most of all, the more than 11,000 Vermonters who signed a petition opposed to the tax," said R. Scott DeBruin, president of the Vermont State Dental Society.
The rejection of this tax may aid in efforts to improve Americans' access to dental care. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, only 62 percent of adults between the ages of 18 and 64 have visited a dentist within the past year.
