Tobacco use is a well-known cause of various health conditions, such a lung cancer and respiratory problems. However, some individuals do not realize how cigarettes, pipes or chewing tobacco may affect their oral health, which is visible to other persons with whom they come in contact. A recent article published in the Grand Bahama Tribune highlights how these types of products may result in tooth loss, unsightly teeth stains or chronic bad breath.
Mucosal changes, which are those that pertain to the mouth tissue, are commonly caused by irritants, toxins and carcinogens found in cured or burned tobacco leaves, the newspaper explained. These abnormalities may cause white or black patches in the mouth, along with inflamed tissues or lengthened taste buds - a condition known as hairy tongue.
When the tissues that support the teeth are damaged, it is likely that individuals will experience tooth loss, the news provider reported. Moreover, tobacco products, especially those used with pipes, contain sulfur that dries the mouth and promotes bad breath.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 21 percent of American adults are smokers.
