Website provides database for dental costs
Updated: 4/13/2011 7:00:06 PM

People can now find information on dental costs conveniently online A new website run by the nonprofit agency Fair Health provides an extensive database that includes the average costs of dental procedures based on different providers and insurance companies, according to a recent article published in the Albany Times-Union.

"There still is a big black hole in what providers are charging. Until consumers have that information, they can't figure out their out-of-pocket liabilities until they know what a doctor charges," Leslie Moran, a vice president at one New York health plan association, told the newspaper.

The online resource details provider fees and also gives users an estimate for the treatment expenses that they may have to pick up, the news provider explained. For example, the site states that the average cost of a simple filling procedure in Albany is $140 and patients are responsible for paying $28 of this amount.

The Times-Union noted that fairhealthconsumer.org will begin providing information on medical treatments later this year.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, out of 172 million Americans who have health insurance, more than 45 million do not have dental coverage.
