Cosmetic dentists may reshape gums to improve the appearance of teeth Dental reshaping may improve appearance of smiles

The appearance of an individual's smile may affect his or her self confidence or how other people perceive them. While good oral hygiene can promote a visually attractive grin, some individuals may require a procedure known as dental reshaping to alter their gums or teeth.

Kirk Kimmerling, a cosmetic dentist from Virginia, recently highlighted the benefits of gum and tooth reshaping treatments.

"A person's gum tissue frames the top of their tooth and should be within certain dimensions and parameters for a more attractive smile," he explained. Professionals can adjust these tissues to expose the desired amount of enamel, he added.

Individuals who have chipped, cracked or damaged teeth due to grinding may want to consider contouring procedures, Kimmerling said. He explained that during these appointments, dentists will modify the length, edges or position of teeth to improve the overall appearance of a person's mouth. However, he noted that patients must have healthy teeth and gums to be considered for these cosmetic treatments.

According to the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentists, two-thirds of cosmetic dental patients are females. The organization also states that the majority of these visitors are between the ages of 41 and 60.
