Aspiring dental hygienist Brittney Clark, who was recently named Miss North Carolina International, visited a number of North Carolina elementary schools to teach kids about the importance of oral health, according to a recent article published in the McDowell News.
The news source reported that Clark taught the kids a relatively new method of brushing their teeth, of which their parents may not be aware. Instead of brushing across the mouth from gum to gum, she recommended that the children use circular motions to maximize cleaning efficacy. The pageant winner also told them to brush their tongues to help prevent unpleasant breath.
The newspaper noted that Clark encouraged kids to participate in an upcoming Tooth Bus event, during which they would have the opportunity to receive discounted dental treatments.
Children's oral health is a serious concern for many dentists who see young patients with signs of early tooth decay. Dental problems early in life may increase these individuals' risk of developing gum disease or losing their teeth in adulthood.
According to the most recent National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, a total of 92 percent of adults have tooth decay and 5 percent do not have any of their natural teeth.
