For many low-income adults, dental care is a luxury, as well as a necessity. The increasing number of professionals who volunteer their time to offer free oral treatments has provided numerous individuals with services that they would not otherwise be able to afford.
However, some Virginians are capitalizing on these opportunities, according to a recent article published in the Roanoke Times. The news source reported that after 900 tickets to a two-day dental clinic were distributed by the city's Mission of Mercy, listings for these vouchers began popping up on online auction sites such as eBay and Craigslist.
The news provider noted that the starting bid for one of the permits was $250, with an option to "but it now" for $550. The event coordinators have requested that the listings be removed by site operators.
Dental practices across the nation have attempted to curb the recession's negative affects on oral care. Many provide discounted cleanings to children who are susceptible to developing serious health conditions due to tooth decay.
More than 20 percent of children between the ages of 2 and 5 suffer from tooth decay, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
