In order to help kids avoid educational disruptions caused by toothaches or corrective dental procedures, members of the North Carolina Association of Educators (NCAE) recently held a collection drive for oral care supplies, according to an article published by the Public News Service.
The news source reported that 37 percent of children in North Carolina schools have tooth decay and half of these cases are ongoing due to lack of dental care.
"We must make sure they have what they need in the classroom, but we also want to make sure our children have what they need outside the classroom to be the very best students they can be," NCAE President Kristy Moore told the news organization.
To help combat this issue, the Public News Service noted that the educators collected 1,000 tubes of toothpaste, 1,400 toothbrushes and more than 3,400 other oral hygiene items, which will be donated to students.
Better access to dental supplies and health information may reduce the amount of school time that kids miss due to appointments for cavity fillings.
According to the National Institutes of Health, approximately 42 percent of children between the ages of 2 and 11 have cavities in their primary teeth.
