Survey finds that a person's smile may affect their professional and personal lives
Updated: 3/21/2011 4:59:59 PM

A new survey shows that dental care may be important for physical health, as well as personal success According to the results of the Crest and Oral-B Great Canadian Smile Survey, the appearance of an individual's teeth may have a significant impact on several aspects of their life, including their career success and personal relationships.

The survey findings showed that 72 percent of respondents believe that having an unattractive smile may hinder one's professional success and 5 percent feel as though they have been discriminated against in the workplace for this reason.

A person's smile ranked higher than their eyes and physical fitness as the primary focal point of men and women when they are judging the appearance of someone of the opposite sex, according to the poll.

Dentist Janet Tamo said people should be aware that having a white smile may not mean that a person's teeth and gums are healthy.

Responses to the questionnaire revealed that more people would choose to invent an oral-care product that successfully whitens teeth than one that restores enamel or improves gingivitis.

She recommends simple steps, including brushing, flossing and rinsing to help prevent gingivitis and other oral conditions that may not be immediately noticeable.
