Sacramento schools are trying to reduce city's insufficient dental care
Updated: 3/18/2011 12:59:59 PM

Children who do not receive proper dental care may develop early childhood tooth decay Only one in five children who are eligible for the dental health insurance provided by the city of Sacramento actually receive care, according to a recent article by the Sacramento News and Review. Now, educators and dental volunteers are collaborating to help reduce the negative effects that are associated with poor oral health among children.

Debra Payne, a planner at one of the city's children's health commissions, told the news source that a number of factors may prevent kids from receiving care, such as language barriers or lack of transportation.

Earlier this month, students at one Sacramento elementary school were able to take time out of their normal curriculum to watch a video about proper dental care, the news organization reported. Volunteer dentists who performed screenings on the kids found that as many as four out of every 10 were in need of immediate dental care.

The American Dental Association warns that although elementary school children may be losing their baby teeth, keeping them healthy is still important. According to the organization, baby teeth hold the place of permanent structures, so children who lose their teeth too early due to decay may experience a crooked or overcrowded smile.
