Alcohol-free mouthwashes provide an alternative for individuals who want to maintain good dental health without the downsides of rinses that do contain alcohol.
As children learn the importance of oral care, mouthwash should become part of their routine. However, mouthwashes can consist of up to 20 percent alcohol and can be harmful to children who swallow them, according to Oral-B.com. Adults may also find that mouthwashes with high alcohol content can cause burning or discomfort when used for the recommended amount of time.
Many alcohol-free solutions provide the same benefits of mouthwashes with alcohol. They clean by binding the surfaces of germs in a person's mouth and causing them to burst, the website stated.
New research from the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine has shown an association between the use of alcohol-free rinses and decreases in preterm birth.
A group of 49 pregnant women who were given alcohol-free mouthwash showed significantly lower incidences of preterm birth than the group of 155 pregnant women who did not use the rinse.
Researchers said they believe the same ingredient in alcohol-free mouthwashes that kills germs, cetylpyridinium chloride, decreases preterm birth in pregnant women with periodontal disease.
