Easy ways to save money on household items
Updated: 2/11/2011 1:00:12 PM

Small changes can help families save money In response to tough economic times, parents are becoming more savvy about spending and focusing on ways to save on common household items.

“Start by examining your trash,” is one idea on SavingAdvice.com, a website dedicated to money-saving tips. The site suggests opting for reusable cleaning products. For example, buying sponges instead of disposable wipes, or using washable plastic containers instead of sandwich bags.

While food is a necessity, how parents buy snacks or other food products can effect your bill. Avoid individually packaged snacks, suggests SavingAdvice.com, and buy family-size to get more value and waste less.

The American Dental Association (ADA) advises parents and educators to talk to children about how much toothpaste they need to use while brushing their teeth and that a pea-size amount of toothpaste is enough for daily cleanings. Simple ideas such as educating children about dental health could save money on toothpaste and toothbrushes.

Toothbrushes should be replaced every three months, but since they are always in-demand within a household, buying in bulk can save money and cut down the shopping list, as well.
