Forgoing dental insurance increases risk of poor long-term oral health
Updated: 2/3/2011 4:59:51 PM

Forgoing dental checkups can increase the risks of having poor oral health. Nearly one-third of Americans go about their day without dental insurance, leaving themselves wide open to developing nasty cavities. They may also be exacerbating minor cases of tooth decay, and encouraging later development of severe tooth and gum diseases.

There are a number of reasons dental insurance may not always be a viable option. During the present unemployment crisis, many individuals who are struggling to make ends meet forgo paying for dental coverage. When visiting the dentist drops down one's list of priorities, the quality of oral health will inevitably decline.

A number of healthcare providers have worked over the past year to help treat individuals without dental insurance. For example, over the course of 2010, dentists affiliated with Heartland Dental Care provided free dental services, worth approximately $1.1 million, to their local communities and abroad. The dentists administered general exams and cleanings, and performed fillings and extractions at dentistry events worldwide.

Patrick C. Bauer, president of Heartland Dental Care, remarked that "now more than ever, there are people...who need dental services but have no means to afford them – whether they're out of a job, living in poverty or just don't have dental insurance."
