USC dental students treat children through mobile clinic
Updated: 1/27/2011 7:00:08 AM

Children were treated by dental students at USC last week through a mobile dental clinic. Recently, 78 students at the Ivanhoe Elementary School received free dental services. The children were mostly members of low-income families who could not afford visits to the dentist this year, reports the Foothills Sun-Gazette.

The USC Mobile Dental Clinic has partnered with the Visalia Unified School District for nearly 10 years now, giving those without dental insurance access to much-needed care, according to the news outlet.

Graduate dental students at the University of Southern California provided the care. Funding was provided by the Good Samaritan Center in Visalia.

Speaking to the paper, Lucinda Awbery, the district's director of student services, remarked, "We screen kids and find those with the worst cavities and if those parents don’t have any other resources then we bring them to the clinic...The dental health of our students has really improved over the years.”

The American Dental Association stresses the need for professional dental checkups for children. Those of preschool age, in particular, who are at risk of developing early childhood caries (ECC), must learn good oral health care techniques to prevent tooth decay early on.
