Pregnant mothers can benefit from understanding how to teach their soon-to-be children good oral care.
Expectant low-income moms in California will now be able to get their children off to a good start through an education program on healthy dental techniques for kids, reports the Redlands Daily Facts.
The media outlet notes the Center for Oral Health (COH) will provide pregnant mothers with hygienist visits through its clinics. The women will get an assessment of their dental risks. They may also receive tips, such as refraining from sharing utensils with young children.
Speaking to the news outlet, Arlene Glube, director of the COH's operations in Southern California, noted that "it is not uncommon for parents to clean a pacifier in their mouth. What they are doing is transmitting bacteria that live in their mouth to the child."
Redlands Daily Facts also reported that many of the mothers are covered under Medi-Cal, which is often not recognized by dentists.
According to a study by Pew Center on the States, only 31 percent of children enrolled in Medi-Cal received proper dental care in 2007.
