According to a report in the Berkshire Eagle, a dental clinic in Massachusetts has been seeing a burst of new patients.
The Community Health Programs offer relief for the needy in pain caused by severe dental problems.
Demand for emergency dentistry in the Berkshire area is high after last summer saw a cut in MassHealth's coverage of root canals, dentures and fillings. Speaking to the news outlet, program CEO Bryan Ayars remarked, "we alleviate [patients] of their pain and try to set them up [with] a follow-up appointment. We're seeing, on average, five new patients a day."
There are common sense steps almost every individual and parent can take to prevent the need for such emergency dental procedures.
Proper oral care starts early. Parents should teach children to brush and floss properly, twice daily as the American Dental Association (ADA) recommends. This may increase the young's chances of committing long-term to maintaining their dental health.
Lack of water fluoridation in the Berkshire district is cited as another possible reason for the area's high rate of dental issues. The ADA notes that fluoridation is one of the most important public measures for preventing widespread cavities and tooth decay.
