Clinic based in Ohio elementary school offers dental care for children
Updated: 1/14/2011 6:59:51 PM

Parents must teach their children the importance of routine dental care early on. For nearly 30 years, Nancy LaBrosse has worked as a hygienist at a children's dental clinic. Originally started as a service for the poor, the center is now based in Ohio's Madison Elementary School and treats nearly 350 children of need each year, reports the Intelligencer/Wheeling News-Register.

LaBrosse, speaking to the news outlet, notes that the clinic is "geared toward families without dental insurance and those with no means to get dental care....The goal is to sustain the children until they can get care on their own." Dentists conduct dental exams for children twice a week.

The clinic's work may serve as a reminder to parents that they must ensure their children's dental care begins early. As soon as the child gains his or her first permanent teeth, they should be trained in proper flossing and brushing techniques.

To avoid tooth decay and gum disease, parents should emphasize their children brush twice a day, floss at least once a day and get into the habit of scheduling regular dentist appointments. These are three measures critical for ensuring consistent dental health, notes the American Dental Association.
