The American Dental Association (ADA) has long emphasized the health benefits of the mineral fluoride and fluoridated drinking water. Today, the ADA recognized the success of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) in readjusting the fluoride-to-water ratio.
HHS set the fluoride level to .7 parts per million, a scientifically safe amount that will help mitigate fluorosis rates in the general population and reduce tooth decay cases. Communities that have not already fluoridated their water systems are strongly encouraged to do so.
Dr. Gist, president of the ADA, noted that "water fluoridation is one of our most potent weapons in disease prevention, and we want as many people as possible to have the benefits of this simple, safe, inexpensive and proven health care measure."
According to the ADA website, communal water fluoridation is one of the most important public health movements to improve the dental health of Americans.
In addition to maintaining a regular dental care routine, fluoride supplements and treatments are essential for good dental health. Working fluoride treatments into your yearly dental check up will help minimize your chances of developing cavities.
