Dental health education should start at a young age
Updated: 12/15/2010 11:00:01 PM

Dental health education should start at a young age While there are many lessons a child should grab onto during their earlier years, learning about proper dental care may be one of the more important life lessons for them.

Growing up with poor dental health can lead to a host of conditions that include tooth decay as well as heart issues when a person is older.

For one Dallas dentist, the prospect of a child not understanding the importance of regular teeth cleanings is too great, so she has employed a unique approach to get her point across.

Dr. Joanne G. Hoppe is a volunteer at after-school program in the Wilkinson Center and uses a video from the American Dental Association to explain to children exactly what happens when plague builds up in their mouth, the Dallas Morning News reports.

The approach could be successful in educating children and adults about dental health, since failure to remove plaque by brushing one's teeth on a regular basis can lead to gingivitis and periodontal disease, which do not produce a healthy looking mouth.
