An increasing demand for tooth extractions may be occurring in some states

An increasing demand for tooth extractions may be occurring in some states According to The Springfield News-Leader, dental programs in Missouri may be lacking the appropriate amount of coverage for the poor and uninsured.

In recent years, legislators in the state eliminated dental care for most adults who were on Medicaid, the news source reports. Now, only those who are pregnant, blind or in a nursing home are allowed to receive dental services under a state-federal program that helps those who are underprivileged. Children are also able to be treated.

However, the news provider reports that the program does not cover dentures. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 25 percent of U.S. adults who are at least 65 years old have lost all of their teeth. This may result in more people who need dentures.

Twice each year, Jordan Valley (JV), a nonprofit organization that offers medical care for the underserved population in Missouri, helps to pull teeth for free at various dental clinics throughout the state, according to the website.

Tina Munroe, former manager of JV, told the news source that at one of the recent free clinics, as many as 400 people who needed tooth extractions had to be turned away. She added that this demonstrated the demand for better dental care in Missouri.

Low-income families who lack dental insurance can find affordable coverage for themselves and other members of their households.
