Second graders in Wisconsin get a reason to smile According to the Greenbay Press Gazette, second grade students at Suring Elementary School in Wisconsin were recently treated to free dental care services through the Oconto County Seal-A-Smile (SAS) program, which is funded by the state's Division of Public Health and Children's Health Alliance of Wisconsin.

The SAS program allows children both with and without dental insurance to receive care at no cost, the news provider reports. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, children whose families lack coverage are three times more likely to have unmet dental needs compared to those who are insured.

For the Suring Elementary School event, a total of 21 students received oral exams, sealants, fluoride treatments and information pertaining to dental health., the news source reports. Participating children were also given dental floss as well as a toothbrush and toothpaste.

The SAS program also enables these students to receive follow-up visits one year after their initial appointment.

Parents may find that it is important that their children receive the oral care because according to the CDC, 51 million school hours are lost each year due to dental-related complications. Fortunately, there are affordable, low-cost ways in which parents can find dental coverage for their kids.
