Free dental services could close the gap between young minority students and poor oral hygiene Young students at Redlands Christian Migran Association RCMA Wimauma Academy in Florida recently received free dental care treatments from Suncoast Community Health Centers, Tampa Bay Online reports.

Wimauma Academy serves minority children who come from low income families from the kindergarten to the eighth grade level. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, some minority kids are more likely than other to have cavities. For instance, The CDC's research shows 40 percent of Mexican-American children who are between 6 and 8 years old suffer from tooth decay, compared to 25 percent of non-Hispanic whites in this age bracket.

The week-long event allowed a total of 214 students at the school to receive dental screening as well as restorative and preventative care, free of charge, according to the news provider.

Mark Haggett, principal at RCMA Wimauma Academy, told the news source that this event was very beneficial for students because many of their families cannot factor a dentist appointment into their budget.

Fortunately, there are affordable ways that parents can find low-cost dental coverage for their children.
