According to The Oklahoman, the number of children and adults in Oklahoma who have poor dental hygiene may be significantly higher than in other places throughout the country. In fact, a three-day free oral care clinic was recently held to help improve access to dental services for the underprivileged.
Overall, the clinic treated more than 900 people and extracted a total of 1,342 teeth, the newspaper reports. Michael E. Joseph, chairman of the Research and Community Initiatives Advisory Committe for Unite Way of Central Oklahoma, visited the site of the free center at State Fair Park. He told the news source that "the clinic had been open less than eight hours and the dentists had already extracted enough teeth to fill a quart-size Mason jar."
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicates that nearly 25 percent of Americans who are at least 65 years old have lost all of their teeth.
Recent nationwide comparisons have shown that there is poor dental hygiene in Oklahoma. According to America's Health Rankings, this state is ranked as 50th - for the second consecutive year - for recent dental visits among the adult population.
Fortunately, there are low-cost ways that individuals can find dental coverage for themselves and their families.
