Free clinics may be overwhelmed with need for dental care

Free clinics may be overwhelmed with need for dental care A free health clinic in Charlotte, North Carolina has proved that there may need to be better access to dental care for the uninsured.

According to The Charlotte Observer, a one-day free clinic will be held this month and that while there are more than 700 volunteers, appointments to receive dental care have already been filled.

So far, more than 500 patients have signed up for dental and medical treatment, which will be held at the Charlotte Convention Center, according to the newspaper. The event is sponsored by the National Association of Free Clinics (NAFC) and this is the ninth year it has been hosted in Charlotte. Many of the patients are likely to not have seen a doctor for months, even years.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that an estimated 45 million Americans lack dental coverage, and this is especially true among the older population. Cost was noted as one of the main reasons that many individuals do not seek oral care.

Similar free clinics across the country, including in Arkansas, Connecticut, Georgia and New Orleans, have treated more than 10,000 individuals since last year. But, rather than wait in line, there are affordable ways that individuals can find low-cost dental coverage for themselves and their families.
