Although many residents in Wisconsin continue to receive regular cleanings, some area dentists report that patients are holding off on the more important, expensive procedures because they are too expensive, the Wausau Daily Herald reports.
Nicholas Bretl, Weston Family Dental owner, told the news provider that while many of his patients may have dental insurance, when he tells them something more needs to be done they tend to hold off on the procedure.
Other dental providers claim that delaying some treatments could end up costing more down the road. Paul Szmanda, operator of Szmanda Dental Center, told the newspaper that a filling may initially cost $150. However, holding off on this procedure could lead to a root canal and crown, which could cost approximately $2,000. He added that avoiding a simple cleaning will be less expensive compared to the oral complications that one may ultimately face.
Good oral hygiene and seeing a dentist regularly is important for a person's overall health. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports (CDC), poor dental health has been linked to serious conditions, including diabetes and heart disease.
Many older Americans who have the poorest oral health are economically disadvantaged or lack insurance, according to the CDC.
Fortunately, there are affordable, low-cost ways that individuals can find dental coverage.
