In an effort to address the ongoing demand for access to oral care, three nonprofit organizations in Kansas are combining their efforts, according to the Kansas City Star.
"The Kansas Dental Project" involves the Kansas Action for Children (KAC), the Kansas Health Consumer Coalition (KACC) and the Kansas Association for the Medically Underserved (KAMU).
The project was created after a study at the University of Kansas found that there was a shortage of dentists in the state, according to the newspaper. The researchers found that there are no oral care practices in a total of 15 counties throughout Kansas.
In fact, the researchers found that in an additional 82 counties, there was only one dentist available for approximately every 1,500 patients.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, regular oral exams are important because they can help to prevent future dental problems, including tooth decay and gum disease.
There are low-cost ways in which individuals can find affordable care for themselves and their families.
