Approximately 22,000 children in North Carolina will have better access to oral care due to a state-wide joint effort between the North Carolina Head Start-State Collaboration Office and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. The new program that was recently launched is called the Head Start Dental Home Initiative (HSDHI).
Children whose ages range from birth up to 5 years will be eligible to participate in the state's HSDHI. Dentists will provide them with oral healthcare services as well as educate parents and guardians with the latest information on how to prevent tooth decay.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, tooth decay is the most common chronic disease among children, affecting more than 25 percent of those who are between 2 and 5 years old.
As part of the initiative, teams of pediatric and general dentists will meet children's oral care needs by helping Head Start programs, which promote health among young school kids.
Dan Cheek, North Carolina Dental Society president, said that this program "is extremely important to children in our state who previously had little or no access to oral healthcare."
Parents who need to find dental care for their children can find low-cost, affordable coverage.
