Youth in Wisconsin receive dental care at a reduced cost

Youth in Wisconsin receive dental care at a reduced cost To address the need for better access to dental care for young children, some dentists have set up low-cost programs. According to the Fond du Lac Reporter, oral professionals in Fond du Lac Country, Wisconsin have treated approximately 1,600 underprivileged youth for the last three years at a reduced cost through the Save a Smile program.

Samantha Twohig, one of the program's oral health coordinators, told the news source that "children whose front teeth are black stubs" are among those who receive care. She added that these kids "can't eat or sleep or concentrate."

Children who are 19 years old and younger are eligible to participate in the dental program as long as they qualify for Wisconsin's Medical Assistance. Prior to their first appointment, children go through an initial oral exam and then are provided with instructions on how to maintain good dental hygiene.

About two-thirds of all children who are between the ages of 12 and 19, and come from low-income families, have had tooth decay at some point in their lives, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Fortunately, there are low-cost ways in which parents can find affordable dental coverage for themselves and their families.
